Luxury vinyl flooring has quickly become one of the most popular flooring options in residential and commercial settings. Although vinyl flooring is not a new product, digital printing technology continues to generate more realistic visuals than ever. Luxury vinyl flooring combines the natural looks of wood and stone with premium performance. So, no matter your design preferences or durability requirements, there's a perfect luxury vinyl floor for you.
Luxury vinyl is super-stylish and ultra-durable because of its special layered construction. Unlike hardwood and stone, luxury vinyl is made with synthetic materials. With luxury vinyl flooring you can still have the authentic look of wood and stone flooring throughout your home, but you do not have to worry about accidental spills causing permanent damage.
Expert Advice - LVT FlooringLuxury vinyl flooring, or LVT flooring, has become more and more popular in residential and commercial settings. Join our very own Jim Aaron, VP of Merchandising for Carpet One Floor & Home, for some inside information about luxury vinyl. |
Luxury vinyl flooring is made from composite materials, but it features a layered structure for premium style and performance. The top layer is referred to as the wear layer, and it is strong enough to withstand virtually all stains, scratches, and scuffs. As a result, luxury vinyl never needs any special surface finishes. The wear layer protects the second layer, which is called the design or decorative layer. The decorative layer includes a high-definition visual or wood or stone. Consequently, luxury vinyl flooring looks exactly like real stone or wood.
Underneath the wear layer and design layer are usually support and comfort layers. Some luxury vinyl flooring options, for example, have rigid cores that provide premium dimensional stability to each plank and tile. With this rigid core, the planks and tiles are as thick and strong as regular wood and ceramic. In addition, almost all luxury vinyl floors have a soft and flexible backing that provides some extra comfort underfoot. These backing also help to muffle and reduce noise when walked on.
As you probably can imagine, luxury vinyl flooring can pretty much be installed anywhere in the home. If you want to add the natural looks of wood or stone to your kitchen, bathrooms, or basement, luxury vinyl is a perfect option. It's also great for homes with children and pets!
Speaking of installation, most luxury vinyl floors can be installed without messy adhesives. The planks and tiles will usually click and lock together, so they will remain tight over the subfloor without any gaps in the surface. Furthermore, luxury vinyl floors with rigid cores and flexible backings can be installed over subfloors that aren't perfectly flat and even.
There are a few different types of luxury vinyl flooring options, including vinyl tile flooring and vinyl plank flooring. Vinyl tile is an alternative to ceramic and porcelain tile, while vinyl plank is an alternative to hardwood and laminate. Sheet vinyl flooring should not be mistaken for luxury vinyl, and is a more traditional option that is noted for its installation versatility, but it is not as popular as vinyl tile and vinyl plank.
Most luxury vinyl flooring is considered resistant to water, but there are options that are 100% waterproof. The planks and tiles will never expand or contract when exposed to moisture, nor will moisture ever penetrate past the core and reach the subfloor. Also, luxury vinyl flooring can handle heavy foot traffic and other environmental impacts without collapsing or cracking. Nonetheless, most high-end luxury vinyl floors are virtually indistinguishable from real wood or stone.
